The Danner Vicious is more of a crossbreed between hiking and a work boot, and they are fairly light too. In this Danner Vicious Review, I will give you a little bit of information on this work boot that Danner has been producing as this product has been a very good seller for Danner.
The main focus of this article would be on the Danner Men’s Vicious 4.5 Inch Non-Metallic Toe Work Boot. When it comes to this particular brand, we are usually thinking of heavy-duty, hardcore, thick leather, break-in times for weeks and so on.
But Danner has boots like the Vicious. This is a non-metallic toe which means it has that composite material inside. It’s little on the lighter side and surprisingly provides an easier fit for some.
For some reason, NMT boots always fit better than steel toes. Maybe it has something to do with us…who knows?
Here is a quick side by side comparison of some of the best-selling Vicious boots.

Danner Vicious Boots Review
This is not a traditional work boot from Danner. It has a lot of properties that are more similar to a hiking boot which also makes the boot very comfortable and lightweight.
- Durable, waterproof leather upper with abrasion-resistant heel cap
- GORE-TEX waterproof, breathable lining
- Cushioning PU footbed
- Dual-density EVA cushioning and shock absorbing midsole offers additional durability on the outside edges with shock-absorbent cushioning on the inside for more comfort and support underfoot
- Vibram Vicious oil-and-slip-resistant outsole offers superior indoor and outdoor traction with a low-profile 90 heel
When Danner was designing the vicious, they didn’t skip any steps. They used GORE-TEX for the waterproof membrane. I would like to emphasize here a little bit. This is a breathable membrane.
There are all kinds of membrane out there that claim to be waterproof, but when it comes to GORE-TEX, you will notice the difference in breathability. I know it’s probably going to be a little bit warmer, but it is certainly more comfortable than a lot of other proprietary membranes that are out there.
Next up the Vibram outsole. It’s a dual density Vibram sole which makes the boot durable and bouncy. Danner Trailguard platform provides a nylon shank to this product so that you get some good support and stability. All in a quite a lightweight package especially with that amount of support.
Top Notch Lacing System
When it comes to the lacing system, they truly didn’t skip any steps. They used some beautiful pass through laces that are riveted in. Then they have the speed lace at the top that is a locking speed lace.
Once you lace is in there, it’s kind of just folds around your lace and just stays put. They used some really nice hardware. Danner did a really good job on the hardware alone of building something that is strong, durable and dependable. And, it’s all metal.
There are no plastic parts that would break off and need to be replaced. Everything is built-in to last. It’s really into there and through multiple layers of leather and nylon to secure itself to the boot.
As always, Danner does a great job of padding the collar and padding the tongue. Especially with the Danner Vicious being a comp toe work boot, you get all of these extra paddings just to protect the foot and giving you a nice comfortable all-day work boot.
So, along with the heel cup Danner used a really nice roughed out rubberized material that offers a lot of durabilities back there. It just makes the boot feel stronger and more durable.
Wide Toe Section
As you can see from the boot, the toe section has very few pieces. That means there is going to be fewer places for water to sip in. Also, on the front of the boot, you will see that they didn’t rubberize the toe on the Vicious.
Although they did bring the front piece of rubber a little bit higher than normal, I think it’s a really nice touch. It makes the boot look better and also it secures that whole section of the boot to the sole.
It is Danner; laces are top notch. We don’t even need to talk about them.
It gives a secure fit in the heel section and also gives you a little bit of room in the toe box to give your feet some moving space when carrying heavy loads or changing directions quickly.
Dual-density EVA midsole absorbs all the extra shock and gives you comfort. This is a versatile boot with a low profile 90-degree heel, and the oil and slip resistant outsole is perfect for indoor and outdoor work.
Inside The Danner Vicious 4.5 NMT Work Boot
Inside the boot, you will find a single dual-density insole. It’s nothing fancy, just soft rubber material to give some extra cushioning. They did do the perforation on that to push air around. With the boot being a Gore-Tex membrane. It’s pretty important to have an insole like this one.
Fit & Size
Now comes the most important part. Fit and size. Well, it’s Danner, and they are known for their size and fit. It’s usually dead on. From one Danner to another, you just move through their boots without worrying about size.
This boot, because of the comp toe, guys usually buy it half size bigger than they usually would from their non-safety toe boots. So, if you are wearing a 10, try wearing 10.5 and if you are wearing 11, try 11.5.
I’ve seen guys go for 3rd pairs in a row. From soft to comp toe, they buy a pair each year. That’s just how comfortable these boots are. They are also long lasting considering the build quality and comfort.
If these boots can last you a year, they are worth the money. You can go pretty hard on the Danner Vicious, and they will prove themselves in all kinds of weather, from 100 to below zero temperatures.
So that’s the Danner Vicious Review. Guys from Danner used their hiking boot department to engineer this work boot. They made it nimble and tough from the ground up. It’s a work boot that is designed like a hiking boot that’s made for climbing worksites.
